Ava DuVernay Barbie: Mattel Honors ‘Selma’ Director With Ava DuVernay Barbie [PHOTO]

Although "Selma" was famously snubbed in the past Academy Award nominations, even leaving David Oyelowo out of a very deserved Best Actor nod, the rest of the world has taken to widely recognize the work behind it, particularly as it tells the story of Martin Luther King's fights during a time of social turmoil - even Mattel acknowledges the movie's importance, launching an Ava DuVernay Barbie!

Last year, the United States entered a series of protests that lasted for months following the shootings of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York - and it was also the time for a biopic on the most iconic man in the civil rights movement of the 1960s, Martin Luther King, and now Ava DuVernay's Barbie doll takes another step in the right direction.

According to The Mary Sue, the Ava DuVernay Barbie is part of a larger line the famous doll is creating called "Sheroes," with some of the most inspiring women out there; besides the director, other honorees were actresses Kristin Chenoweth and Emmy Rossum, Lucky Magazine's Eva Chen, 5 year-old fashion designer Sydney "Mayhem" Keiser and country singer Trisha Yearwood.

Jezebel reports that the Ava DuVernay Barbie will not be reaching stores across the country, though perhaps it should; however, all six new Barbie dolls are one of a kind and will be auctioned soon enough, with the profit going to charity.

The New York Post reports that, at the same time as the Ava DuVernay Barbie doll was launched, another Mattel lady drowned: following some serious allegations that Sea World employees were mistreating orcas, Mattel finally caved in to animal rights' groups pressure and put the Sea World Trainer Barbie line to rest, as the public image of the famous parks is under scrutiny.

In any case, you can see the new line of Sheroes above, including the Ava DuVernay Barbie doll in her director's chair!
