Along with being the halftime show at the Super Bowl, Madison Square Garden is the venue every artist dreams of performing at, and for years the record for most performances at the famous indoor arena belonged to British singer-songwriter Elton John - but now it's Billy Joel's "Piano Man" taking the spot.
After having performed at the iconic arena 64 times throughout his career, John seemed like a shoe-in for eternity at Madison Square Garden, but Billy Joel's "Piano Man" was the one to top the bills this time around - and the iconic singer even honored John during the performance!
According to NBC New York, Billy Joel the "Piano Man" was full of energy during the concert, singing a wide variety of his biggest hits throughout a long career, including songs like the iconic "We Didn't Start the Fire" and the much-covered "Uptown Girl," to an audience of all ages.
Newsday reports that Billy Joel the "Piano Man" was well aware of the significance of the concert, speaking about the very first time he played at the famous venue, on December 14, 1978, when he performed "Honesty," a song he doesn't often sing during concerts due to personal reasons - but this was a special occasion for the iconic performer, a native New Yorker himself.
According to The Huffington Post, Billy Joel the "Piano Man" seemed humbled by the major occasion, welcoming his audience to "Madison Square Garden, the center of the universe," as 20,000 fans roared in acclaim to hear the singer-songwriter - fans whom he also thanked for having been there every step of the way.
Aware of whose record he was breaking, Joel wasn't shy to honor Elton John by singing one of the British singer's most iconic songs, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," as the stage beamed with yellow lights.
"He's a good man and a good friend and I'd like to dedicate this song to him," Joel said, speaking of the "Rocket Man" singer, with whom he's shared the stage a few times.
