Odd Creature With ‘Fur And A Beak’ Turns Up On Russian Shore [PHOTOS]

The corpse of an unknown sea creature with a furry tail was recently found on Sakhalin Island, near the Shakhtersk airport in Russia.

Based on the animal's remnants, the giant creature seems to be "twice the length of human." It also featured a long nose, much like a fowl's beak.

Photos of the questionable animal soon made its way on social media after several locals posted photos online and suddenly became viral.

The Siberian Times reports that some people have claimed that the carcass belongs to a dolphin originating from the Ganges River in India. These allegations stem from inferences due to the dolphin's extensive body and long yet narrow snout.

However, the fur on the tail and its large size debunks the theory. An expert even asserted that fresh water dolphins from the Ganges traveling all the way to the Far East is simply impossible due to the salt water oceans.

Deputy Head of the Forecasting Department of the Sakhlin Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography Nikolay Kim noted, "Judging by the appearance of the head, this is clearly some big dolphin. Accordin to a characteristic of the skin, it is a rare species."

Kim continued, "I doubt that it lived in our waters. Most likely, the animal was brought by the warm current. Here often appear tropical and subtropical species. On cooling, they stay here and then die."

"I can confidently say that this is some kind of a dolphin. However, it has fur. It's unusual. Dolphins do not have any fur," Nikolay added.

In the case that the animal is a dolphin, the perplexing presence of fur can be explained by David Smith's theory.

The Professor of Marine Biology at Essex University proposed that the hairy layer may possibly be a type of "filamentous algae." But the professor also suggested that the creature could be "an ancient species" that had only been discovered now due to permafrost preservation. Smith even cites that the animal could possibly be a mammoth.
