Burger King Veggie One-Ups McDonald’s – After India Fast Food Success, BK Eyes Vegetarians

As there are more vegetarians and vegans in the world, there's no surprise to see that the biggest fast food chains are trying to get into the new trend, as to not lose their base of customers as they move to healthier diet plans - and that's exactly what the planned Burger King veggie menu is taking into accounts.

Following the very successful 2014 release of a large Burger King's veggie menu in India that included six meatless burgers, the second biggest fast food chain in the world (after McDonald's) is now considering to broaden their meat-free options worldwide.

According to Business Insider, the India CEO of the chain, Raj Varman, has spoken at length about the vast success of the Burger King veggie menu in the country, as its numbers have allowed them to consider a slow launch worldwide, particularly in markets with a broader vegetarian population.

"Looking at the response here, the global management is evaluating introducing some of these options going forward to other vegetarian-friendly markets like the UK," Varman told news outlets.

Time Magazine reports that there's currently a Burger King veggie option in the U.S., the Morning Star Veggie Burger; however, they're currently considering launching their six other offerings from India, including: vegetarian Whopper, the BK Veggie, Spicy Bean Royale, Crispy Veg, Paneer King Melt and the Veg Chilli Cheese Melt.

According to Quartz, the Burger King veggie option isn't the only one currently being thought of, as another fast food giant, Wendy's, recently tested a black bean burger in select locations in Ohio to great success, as the two chains lead the way towards entering the vegetarian fast food market.

In the past, McDonald's has attempted to offer vegetarian products to incredibly poor results, and the CEO in 2011, Don Thompson, told investors that restaurants would end up serving four meatless burgers per day.

There's still no official comment on whether the Burger King veggie menus will be reaching markets outside India soon.
