Brokeback Mountain 10th Anniversary: Jake Gyllenhaal And Anne Hathaway Talk About Late Co-Star Heath Ledger

Ten years after the screening of Brokeback Mountain, Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway reunited in an interview with Out and reminisced the good times they had while filming the movie that earned Ang Lee his Oscar Best Director trophy in 2006.

PEOPLE Magazine reports the actors also talked about their late co-star Heath Ledger, who died due to an accidental drug overdose in 2008.

Speaking about the Oscar-winning actor, Gyllenhaal shares he's known Ledger way before they shot the film.

"We were friends," the 34-year-old actor shared. "We went to a sort of boot camp, where we'd all hang out and learn to ride. Heath already knew how to ride really well, but we'd ride and hang out on the ranch outside of Los Angeles."

The Oscar Best Supporting Actor nominee for his role as Jack Twist admitted he misses his friend.

"While there are many parts of the real story that are sad, one of the saddest things is that I won't be able to exchange ideas creatively with Heath again." He added, "that was one of the most beautiful things to come out of that."

Hathaway continued talking about Ledger saying he almost broke his hand while shooting an overwhelming scene. "Heath just really wanted to go there, and kind of got down," the 32-year-old actress shared about the Oscar Best Actor nominee for his role as Ennis Del Mar. "The plan was for him to put his face against the wall - that's what the shot was supposed to be - and he just wound up punching the brick."

"Everyone was freaking out because it was a real wall. It wasn't a movie brick wall. It was a f------ brick wall," she continued. "And he did it, and they got it, and they said his hand was mangled. He might have actually broken it."

Gyllenhaal added that the production of the movie created a special bond between all those involved. "We are all still close - not just bonded by the success of the film, but bonded by the experience. It was an intimate project in that way. We'd wake up and make breakfast for each other and hang out."

"Heath and Michelle fell in love. It was a really special, special time."
