Study Shows that Exercise Can Help Lower the Chances of Mental Disorder

Exercise associated with a person's mental health? Any kind of exercise whether it may be mild or extensive physical activity that we can do during our leisure time of a current healthy habit is said to be helpful to our mental health. An article in NDTV said that a new study has found that indeed exercise can help people avoid mental disorder.

Faculty of Sciences for Physical Activity had a team of researchers and the Sports Universidad Politecnica de Madrid joined forces with the European University has found that the level of exercise performed is related to the chances of being vulnerable to mental disorders.

The study included participants from the age of 15 to 74 years old. They found that the adults in the Community of Madrid who does mid-range or high-level of physical activity had a healthier and higher mental health condition than others.

They found that 15 percent suffered from mental disorder and 19.8 percent were not active. The goal of the research was to be able to see the connection between the level of mental health and physical activity by using analysis as to whether there is a connection between the kind of physical activity being done and the environment as to which it was done. They also assessed and checked the physical activity that was associated with the chances of mental disorders.


The team of researchers used the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire in order to check the physical activity data provided. For example the intensity, frequency and how long it was done in a certain situation. The questionnaire was used to measure the mental health status, in this way they can check the possible cases of mental or psychiatric disorder like primary care or general population. The people who performed high to mid-level physical exercise showed good mental health.
