Kaley Cuoco’s ‘Burning Bodhi’ Character, Big Departure from 'Big Bang Theory’s' Penny

Kaley Cuoco is expanding her horizons. In a new, dark indie film called "Burning Bodhi," the "Big Bang Theory" actress is showing a totally different side to the Penny that everybody is so used to.

Kaley Cuoco shot "Burning Bodhi" in 2014 during a week-long break from her extremely busy "Big Bang Theory" schedule. It's only now that the grungy flick is being released in cinemas, according to Movie Pilot.

The movie's writer and director, Matthew McDuffie, describes the plot of "Burning Bodhi" as about a group of friends returning to their hometown following the death of a high school friend.

"This film is about your first dead friend. It's about grief and laughter, and celebrating life, about growing up; whatever that means," McDuffie said.

It appears that not only did Cuoco enjoy her break from "The Big Bang Theory" shooting the indie film, but she is proud of her role. On Instagram, she uploaded a photo of her look for her character in the film - sporting heavy smokey eyes and short grungy hair.

McDuffie is also proud of Kaley's work in the film, saying "We got her for seven days. She immediately came on set ready to work. The role was something very different for her and she became Katy. It was incredible to see her transformation."

According to the Albuquerque Journal, the filmmakers reached out to Kaley Cuoco, who for her part, was also drawn to Katy, her character and her story. The filmmakers were impressed as well, because Kaley was able to transform herself and was a complete professional on-set.

Stills from the film were released this year, and it's clear that Kaley Cuoco has departed from her "girl next door" persona in "Big Bang."

"Burning Bodhi" filmed for 18 days in New Mexico. Last night, it premiered at the Austin Film Festival, but no details have been released as to its theater release date.

During the premiere, Kaley was positively radiant, as shown in this photo here.

Kaley Cuoco stars alongside Sasha Pieterse, Meghann Fahy and Eli Varga in "Burning Bodhi." According to The Inquisitr, Madsen had been nominated for an Academy Award in 2004 for her role in the film "Sideways," while Horn is known for her appearance in "Magic Mike," according to The Inquisitr.
