How the Nachos and National Nachos Day came to be

A Mexican man named Ignacio Anaya was said to be the person responsible for the nacho. In 1943 in the border town of Piedra Negras, Anaya accidentally invented nachos after hungry wives of American soldiers, arrived at Victory Club, the restaurant where he works. The women had been looking for sustenance after a day of shopping,

Without a chef and with only tortillas and cheese in the kitchen, Anaya decided to cutting the tortilla into triangles and melt the cheese. He then put jalapeno peppers on top of the chips and cheese and voila, the first-ever Nacho's Special Dish was born.

The special dish was called Nacho's because Nacho was a nickname Anaya is called for his vertically-challenged physique. The dish later became popular in Texas and the Southwest over the next 20 years, according to nationalnachosday.com, a website created solely for the special occasion.

As for National Nachos Day, October 21 was originally declared the International Day of the Nacho after Ignacio Anaya died in 1975. A bronze plaque erected in Piedras Negras in his honor.

Other upcoming special days include the National Espresso Day on November 23, Beaujolais Nouveau Day on November 19 and National Sangria Day on November 20.
