For those who are strict with their Atkins and Paleo diet, carbohydrates might be considered as a huge enemy. According to Libby Limon, nutritional therapist, grains which are one of the most common sources of carbs, should not be deserted completely. "Some people can eat grains with no problem at all"

It depends on your individual ability to digest grains, and on your immune system and blood sugar regulation," Limon stated. Though carbohydrates may contribute in a person's weight gain, experts say that not all carbohydrates are harmful to one's health. Infact, carbohydrates are beneficial for the body to work properly. 

Studies found that whole grains have a number of health benefits. It decreases the chance of stroke by 30 to 36 percent. They also lessen a person's danger of acquiring type 2 diabetes by 21 to 30 percent. Whole grain lowers heart illnesses' threat by 25 to 28 percent and increases ones capacity to manage his weight. Other research findings show that whole grains are effective in minimizing risk of asthma, contributes to stronger carotid arteries, decreases threat of inflammatory ailment, colorectal cancer and other gum and tooth problems. They also help in maintaining good level of blood pressure.

Fiber is also a good source of carbohydrates. Baker Karen Collins, founder of The Happy Bread Company stated, "Very simply, our bacteria keeps us alive. So to keep your organs healthy you need to feed your bacteria an adequate amount of fiber on a daily basis."

Though experts had established the good role of carbohydrates in one's health, they believe that the key to having a healthy diet is to have the right amount of carbs everyday. "Carbohydrates shouldn't make up more than 60 per cent of your daily food intake. Vegetables are also carbohydrate foods, so you want to be getting a lot of your energy from them to benefit from their nutrient density. For the average person who isn't doing intense training, I recommend one to two portions of whole grains a day," Limon stated.
