Salmonella Outbreak From Chia Powder: CDC Emphasizes Vigilance

Affecting more than 31 people in 16 different states, the uncanny spread of Salmonella infection were discovered to be from an organic Chia Powder. CDC issued a state of emergency for more than 20 reports of salmonella related illness that surfaced from different states. Since organic Chia Powder and Chia seeds are extensively manufactured and distributed to in great proportions, the CDC recommends the public to avoid consuming these products to prevent Salmonella illnesses that may result from contamination.

Chia Powder which is a good source of numerous essential vitamins and minerals such as omega fatty acids and proteins has been usually used as an add-on to ice creams or smoothies. The CDC recommends the consumers to coordinate with the numerous CDC websites for information regarding Chia powder, its shelf life, and when to best buy these products.

Salmonella infection is a type of food poisoning which can be acquired from consuming food sources that has been contaminated with a certain type of bacteria, of which enteriditis is one of the most common bacterial strain in the United States. Salmonella infection can be clinically seen as abdominal cramps, fatigue and weakness in the first 24 to 72 hours of infection. Research shows that Salmonella poisoning accounts for the most number of food poisoning cases recorded in U.S. history.

 FDA investigates the outbreak of Salmonella infection from the tiny black and white Chia seeds that sprouted from the ground. Many companies such as Navitas Natural that manufactures and distributes Chia powder, issued their recall stating, "Based on investigations by FDA and California Department of Public Health, one of our suppliers, Health Matters America Inc./Organic Traditions, has expanded their recall of Chia products. As a result, we are expanding our voluntary recall to include a broader date range of products."
