Korean barbeque and samgyeopsal is probably the most popular type of grill across the world right now. Korean cuisine is very vibrant, and their dishes are truly world-class. But, did you know Korean dishes can be done at home, even samgyeopsal? If not, then this is your lucky day. In this article, we will show you how to do a Korean samgyeopsal at home. The procedures are easy and hassle-free, and you can prepare it in just minutes!

The Korean-style Samgyeopsal

Samgyeopsal is a Korean term for grilled pork belly. You can choose whether you should cook the belly without seasoning or marinate it with your favorite herbs and spices. Either way, the pork belly is an essential part of Korean samgyeopsal, so make sure to prepare it well.

Korean Samgyeopsal Ingredients:

  • ½ kilo pork belly (add more if you are eating with more people)
  • ¾ cup Korean BBQ Sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • One bowl perilla leaves or lettuce
  • Soybean paste
  • Sesame oil

The ingredients of Korean samgyeopsal might be a little unfamiliar to you, but all of the ingredients mentioned can be bought from your local store. But, if you want to make a homemade authentic Korean samgyeopsal just like the ones in Korea, you can check online stores if they have Korean ingredients and marinades that you can buy. Make sure the pork belly meat is fresh, as well as the lettuce.

Cooking procedures

One good thing about Korean samgyeopsal is it gathers friends and family together to cook around the table, and it doesn't take much time to prepare as well! Compared to other grilling techniques and grilled dishes, samgyeopsal is more comfortable to cook and has many variations that you can mix and match.

To start cooking samgyeopsal at home, you will need to marinate your pork belly. You can marinate it with plain salt and pepper, or do your customized marinade. You can make it sweet, savory, or both. It is best to leave the pork belly marinade overnight in the freezer. But, you can also marinate it 2 to 3 hours before you cook it to let the flavor stick.

If your marinated pork belly is ready, it's time to grill it! Korean samgyeopsal used to be cooked in traditional grills, but nowadays, we have electric grills that we can easily install in our dining table or kitchen. It is portable and easy to clean as well, so you can choose to eat samgyeopsal indoors or outdoors.

Once the grill starts to heat up, add the marinated pork belly strips. You can add oil to it, but since pork belly has a lot of fat, the meat will make its oil once it's on the grill. Grill each side for about 3 minutes each until it turns golden brown.

When the belly strips look like they are ready to eat, you can now put it on a plate and serve it to your friends and family. You can make your sauce, add Korean side dishes, and more. Most people also eat the pork belly with lettuce and rice to balance the flavors, and it is a must-try for first-time samgyeopsal eaters.
