How to cook spaghetti squash perfectly

Spaghetti is one of the most eaten food across the world. There are different versions of spaghetti. In Asian countries, their spaghetti is most often sweet. In European and British countries, they have a bit of a sour flavor. Overall, spaghetti is enjoyed by everyone. 

Spaghetti is usually made with three ingredients: tomato sauce, spaghetti pasta, and meatballs. Therefore, spaghetti is meat-based. However, since there are vegetarians out there, they also have their spaghetti version. They call it spaghetti squash.

Ingredients of spaghetti squash

In making spaghetti squash, all you need is:

  • Spaghetti squash
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil

How to prepare spaghetti squash

Unlike other spaghetti versions, this vegetarian spaghetti recipe does not need pasta. This is 100% vegan, which means it does not include any meat or animal products. 

Before going into the squash preparations, preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Let the oven heat while you are preparing your squash.  

To start the recipe, you need a big squash to work with. Cut the squash lengthwise and scoop out the seeds. Make sure all seeds are gone and extracted because it can choke you when you eat it. 

Next, put a generous amount of olive oil over the squash. Make sure to drizzle some inside the hole of the squash so it will taste and cook well. After that, add salt and pepper to taste. 

You may add some other spices if you want to add more flavor to it. You can add rosemary, cilantro, basil, or even other spice powders. You can put whatever you want to add to your spaghetti squash. 

Next, place the squash on a baking pan with a baking sheet. Turn the squash upside down and pop some holes on the skin of it. The holes will let the squash breathe easily when it is popped in the oven.

To make tender strands of squash spaghetti, bake the squash in the oven for 30-40 minutes. Do not leave the squash in the oven for more than an hour. By then, it will be hard for you to make the strands after. Leaving it for an hour will make the squash meat mushy. 

Once the squash is baked perfectly, take it out of the oven. Let it rest on the side for a while. 

When it cools a bit, grab a fork and gently scrape lines on the squash. The insides should be tender and easy to scrape. Work your way in the squash and make sure you scraped all sides. 

Once the spaghetti strands are done, it is now ready to serve. Season it with more salt or pepper to add more flavor. 

One important thing to remember when baking squash in the oven is the cooking time should depend on the squash's size. If your squash is big, bake it for 30-40 minutes. If it's small, adjust the time to 20 minutes. 

If you think the recipe is too simple, you can always add your twist to it. You can add in green vegetables, some cauliflower pieces, or even beans. You can be as creative as you can when making spaghetti squash, and it will make a great, healthy meal anytime
