Native to North India, moringa is known as "the miracle tree." It's now classified as a superfood, but it has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. According to Eating Well, moringa was used to treat a number of ailments including anemia, asthma, bronchitis and cholera. Folk healers also used crushed moringa seeds to help with ulcers and other stomach problems. In these modern times, you can buy moringa powder.

Moringa Health Benefits

As Eating Well reports, moringa has more than seven times the vitamin C of oranges, 10 times the vitamin A of carrots, and 15 times the potassium of bananas. It also has nine times the protein of yogurt, 17 times the calcium of milk and 25 times the iron of spinach. That's why moringa is used for the treatment of malnutrition around the world.

Today adds that moringa contains eight essential amino acids, 36 anti-inflammatory compounds and 46 antioxidants. It's also why this superfood has become a buzzy ingredient in the wellness and beauty industries.

In addition, Mind Body Green shares that moringa can help improve thyroid health, prevent liver damage, fights free radicals, reduces inflammation, balance blood sugar, improve digestion and support brain health.

How To Use Moringa

While there are now moringa farms in the US, it's easier to purchase moringa powder. You can incorporate it into soups, teas and shakes to get the nutritional benefits. Once you have your moringa powder, you can add it to your favorite green smoothie mix. You can also add the powder to your hummus and guacamole recipes. You can also use it for baking bread. Moringa Latte

1 teaspoon moringa powder

1 cup light coconut milk (or other dairy-free milk)

Sweeter (stevia, honey or maple syrup

1 to 2 teaspoons hot water

Mix the moringa powder, stevia, and water in a small bowl. To create a frothy mixture, use a small whisk.

Heat your milk in a saucepan or in the microwave and top with your moringa froth.

Moringa Smoothie

1 cup almond milk

1/2 cup of fresh moringa leaves or 1 tbsp. moringa powder

1 frozen banana, chopped

Combine all ingredients in a high-speed blender.

Blend until smooth and creamy. Drink immediately.

Moringa Pesto

1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

2 cloves garlic, peeled

1 green habanero chili, deseeded and chopped

1 cup cashews

1 cup ounces wild rocket

1 lemon, juiced

1/2 lemon, zested

1 to 2 teaspoons moringa powder

1 teaspoon sea salt

1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Blend all ingredients in a food processor until you reach your desired consistency. You can start with 1/2 teaspoon of the sea salt and pepper so you can adjust the taste. You can also substitute the cashews with whatever nut you prefer.
