A dedicated skincare routine is apparently not enough to keep your skin clear. If you've noticed inflamed or acne-prone skin even after religiously cleansing, toning, exfoliating, and moisturizing, check your diet. Dermatologists warn that there are many foods that can cause lasting damage, and a lot of them are very popular. These foods are hard to resist, but for glowing skin, it will be best to limit your consumption. Here are the top 10 foods that can ruin your skin.

Top 10 Foods That Can Ruin Skin

Dermatologist Dr. Gary Goldenberg tells Byrdie that "poor nutrition is bad for your skin as it is for the rest of your body." Here are the worst foods to avoid:

Processed Meats

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Yoram Harth warns Eat This, Not That! that processed meats like hotdogs, pepperoni, and bacon contain a lot of saturated fats and nitrates that can cause inflammation.

Fatty Meats

Just like processed meats, fatty cuts of fresh meat have high amounts of saturated fats, says cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Michele Green. They also contain concentrated amounts of insulin growth factor that stimulates androgen (sex hormones) production. These hormones trigger increased oil production, and excess oil is one of the major causes of acne. Dr. Green suggests eating leaner cuts of meat like chicken, turkey, and fish.

Pesticide-ridden Fruits and Veggies

Eating fruits and veggies with high levels of pesticides can lead to advanced skin aging or, worse, skin cancer. Check out the Environmental Working Group's Dirty Dozen and go for organic produce instead.

Microwave Meals

It's convenient to pop in a microwave meal in the middle or at the end of a busy day. However, plastic toxins are linked to skin damage. In addition, these meals can be high in sodium which affects your insulin factor and your skin.

Baked Goods

Dr. Green says that doughnuts and other pastries are high in sugar and processed carbs and can have a negative impact on collagen production. Collagen keeps the skin looking firm and supple, but production slows down as we age. We can't stop aging, but we can lessen our doughnut count.

Refined Sugar

White bread, candy, soda, cereals, fruit juices, and snack bars are all sources of refined sugar. Avoiding too much of these foods can help you avoid triggering acne breakouts and other skin conditions like eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis.

Chips and Pretzels

Chips and pretzels are popular snacks but are very high in sodium. Salt can dehydrate skin, and this leads to premature lines and wrinkles.

Dairy

Dairy products can cause hormonal imbalance since they may contain antibiotics and hormones. For those with acne and rosacea, it will help to look for hormone and antibiotic-free milks, cheeses, and ice creams.

Whey Protein

While drinking whey protein shakes can help you in muscle-building, the increase in androgen production is known to cause or increase breakouts. Try a vegan protein powder instead.

Specialty Coffee

The mix of caffeine, refined carbohydrates, and sugar can cause a spike in cortisol or stress hormones. This will cause your skin to overproduce oil and will most likely result in acne breakouts.
