In their presentation for the Detroit Auto Show, Ford unveils the heir to its widely loved classic car, the GT40, aptly named because the car is only 40 inches tall. The new Ford GT was set to be released in 2016 and will serve as the second generation version of the 2005 Ford GT.
The 2016 Ford GT is a second generation car and was released to mark the 50th year anniversary when the GT40 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. The new Ford GT is also set to be released in 2016 and participate in the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans.
According to official specifications released by Ford, it will have a V6 3.5 liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine and is reported to have at least 600 horsepower of output, in comparison the 2005 Ford GT has a V8 550 horsepower supercharged engine. The 2016 GT's massive engine is capable of reaching zero to 60 miles-per-hour in less than three seconds and can achieve top speeds in excess of 200 miles-per-hour.
The new GT was developed and designed in the last three years by a special dedicated and secret team in the basement of Ford's Product Development Center located in Dearborn; additional report said that the secret entrance to the room was only accessible to selected people.
The introduction of the new Ford GT was part of the trio of cars that Ford unveiled at the last Detroit Auto Show. Among these cars was the off-road pick-up truck F-150 Raptor which was set to be released on 2017. The other one was the Shelby GT350R Mustang; it was the updated, redesigned and street legal version of the GT350 which was previously unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show last Nov.
