Throat Transplant Poland: [+REPORT] Man Can Now Breathe, Swallow And Speak After 17-Hour Throat Transplant Breakthrough

Throat transplant Poland is one of the world's recent medical breakthroughs after a 37-year-old man was successfully operated for replacement of his throat section.

Dr. Adam Maciejewski performed the advanced 17-hour throat transplant Poland operation to the man who had voice box cancer enabling him to breathe, speak and swallow.

Huffington Post reported that it was Michal's advanced voice box cancer that made him incapable of doing the basic functions of the human body including breathing, swallowing and speaking.

In the throat transplant Poland operation, Michal received what medical experts termed as a rare transplant of the thyroid gland, windpipe and esophagus with adjoining muscles, nerves, blood vessels, glands and skin.

Still recovering, Michal rendered his time to the medical team's news conference at the Oncology Center in the southern town of Gliwice.  According to the ABC News report, Michal appeared to be recuperating fast after the 17-hour surgery. The man can now speak and whisper his gratitude for his life-changing condition.

During the conference, Michal who had undergone the April 11 throat transplant Poland operation received the transplant from a donor. He revealed that he is now able to consume liquefied, mashed food.

Although the rare throat transplant Poland operation is considered one-of-its-kind, Maciejewski and the rest of the medical experts who attended Monday conference were all hoping for the successful result. Maciejewski relayed that one of the things they need to watch out for are the risks of infections and rejection.

Michal also needs rigorous rehabilitation for him to "eat, breathe and speak just like we all do," the New York Daily News reported.

Maciejewski received lots of recognitions from several medical experts for the groundbreaking throat transplant Poland operation.

Dr. Bo-Goran Ericzon, a professor at the Karolinska Hospital in Huddinge, Sweden, referred the transplant as "very unique and advanced, especially if the patient can to some extent produce voice and swallow."

The exceptional throat transplant Poland operation to Michal was not his first.  In 2001, he went through his initial surgery by kidney transplant.  Eight years after, he was diagnosed with voice box cancer that led to removal of his voice box and thyroid gland while he was undergoing chemotherapy.

After following up with Michal's poor condition, Maciejewski later on decided that Michal could be a candidate for throat transplant operation.

Dr. Adam Maciejewski, the brain behind the throat transplant Poland operation was known for his successful works in the past. Before performing the breakthrough throat transplant, he already performed two other advanced transplants to two patients

Maciejewski who mastered oncological surgery is a member of the Gliwice Medical team.  His first successful face transplant and also first in Poland, was done to a 33-year-old Polish man in May 2013 after the man's face was completely disfigured by a stone-cutting machine.

Shortly after the first face transplant, Maciejewski lent his expertise to do his second face transplant to a 26-year-old woman whose face was damaged by a disease called neurofibromatosis.

In 2014, he was awarded by Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, the Knight's "Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Polish" recognition for his contribution in the in the field of transplantation.

With Maciejewski throat transplant Poland operation, he is now definitely one Poland's outstanding reconstructive surgeons.
