The winners of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival have just been announced, and it was a big night for Sri Lankan movie 'Dheepan.' The film won the most coveted Palme d'Or Award for director Jacques Audiard.
'Dheepan' is the story of three refugees who flee Sri Lanka and end up facing a different kind of conflict in Paris. It is loosely based on the book 'Persian Letters' by Montesquieu. The film stars Antonythasan Jesuthasan, Kalieaswari Srinivasan and Vincent Rottiers.
The Grand Prix Award was given to 'Son of Saul,' the Hungarian drama directed by Lazlo Nemes. The riveting Holocaust movie had also won the François Chalais Prize as well as the FIPRESCI Award at the festival. With all the previous awards, the movie was expected to nab the Palme d'Or, but still successfully took home the runner-up prize.
Actress Rooney Mara shared the Best Actress Award with Emmanuelle Bercot. Mara was awarded for her performance in the film adaptation of Phyllis Nagy's novel 'Carol.' Bercot received the award for the French drama 'Mon Roi,' which also starred Vincent Cassell and Isild Le Bresco.
Hou Hsiao-Hsien received the Best Director Award for 'The Assassin,' while the Best Screenplay Award was given to 'Chronic,' which was written by Michel Franco.
Vincent Lindon nabbed the Best Actor Award for his performance in 'The Measure of a Man.'
Cesar Acevedo's 'La Tierra y la Sombre' got the Camera d'Or or Best Film Feature while the Jury Prize went to Yorgos Lanthimos' 'The Lobster.'
The Palme d'Or for Short Film was awarded to 'Waves '98,' which was directed by Ely Dagher.
Ethan and Joel Coen, better known as the directorial team the Coen brothers, led the Cannes jury. The other members of the jury were Jake Gyllenhaal, Sienna Miller, Guillermo del Toro, Sophie Marceau, Rossy de Palma, Rokia Traore and Xavier Dolan.
