Google Maps Adds Traffic Update Feature in Time for Memorial Day Rush

Google has just released a new update to its popular Maps application that adds new, more detailed traffic alerts. Google detailed the new features in a recent announcement made on the app's official blog. Maps users will now receive in depth explanations of traffic conditions whenever they input their chosen destination. While driving on the road, the app will now alert you if a traffic jam lies ahead and will give you an estimate of how long you can expect to be sitting in it. Maps also gives users the ability to select alternate routes and provides reasons why that particular route is recommended.

The move can be seen as a timely addition to Google's navigation service, as it tries to stave off competition from similar routing apps and devices such as Waze and Garmin.

Popular tech website Techcrunch notes that traffic data per se is not a new feature on Google Maps. The functionality has already existed in the past. But the new features and alerts are a welcome addition especially with Memorial Day weekend in full swing.

Considered by many Americans as the unofficial start of the summer season, Memorial Day is famous for being one of the most traffic congested days of the year. People across the United States celebrate the coming heat wave by visiting friends and family or paying their respects to those who died while serving in the Armed Forces.

Google's announcement also included information on popular trends during the Holiday. Using the top trending searches from Memorial Day 2014, the company determined that Beaches, Cemeteries, and Restaurants are the top destinations for travellers during this time with Gas Stations, Furniture Stores, and Ice Cream Parlors trailing closely.
