Facebook Messenger Allows Easy Payments

Facebook has released a slew of updates to further improve sending and receiving money through its native Messenger app. The feature was launched earlier this year.

The scheme behind Messenger payments is to make it easier for families and friends to transfer money as easy as handling cash to someone.

Dollar amounts that users type into the chat box will be automatically hyperlinked, and after tapping on the dollar sign, will be transferred to the sendee instantly after confirmation. Previously, those with debit cards are able to use the function.

Transactions can also be done through group chats, without having the sender leave the conversation. Family members and friends can easily send money through a push of a button.

"These new capabilities make it even simpler to send and receive money within Messenger," Facebook said via e-mail. "Whether you're chatting about weekend plans or paying back a friend, it's now easier than ever to finish the conversation about money in the same place it starts - Mesenger."

This new feature is applicable to the Facebook Messenger's desktop, iOS and Android versions in a few cities in the United States, including Seattle, Austin and Portland. The company however, assures its fans that the payment system will expand in their countries worldwide.

"We have taken a phased roll-out approach since the product's initial launch in March," Facebook said, "and we will continue to share updates as functionality expands."

Since launching in March, Facebook has revolutionized social communication and payments, by combining both in their messaging app. Tech experts even predict that they may very well exceed two of the biggest payment services, PayPal and Venmo.

Besides Facebook, Snapchat also released a feature called Snapcash in November last year.

For now, Facebook Messenger can send payments for personal transactions. Businesses may be able to use this feature in the future, according to the company.
