A KFC Manager Just Held a Reddit AMA, Here Are Some Interesting Facts

Yesterday a former manager at Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) held an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on popular online discussion site Reddit. Though the discussion was mostly informal and featured plenty of joking around, there was still a lot of interesting information to be learned about the company and the fast food industry in general.

One of the most popular questions revolved around the fried chicken giant's famous blend of herbs and spices used in their signature original recipe. According to the manager the recipe's secrecy is closely guarded. Here were his responses:

"Can't actually tell you, the herbs and spices come from two different suppliers and they don't even know the other half of the ingredients, so it's a mystery to all!"

"The suppliers know their half, yes. But they don't share them between each other or anyone and therefore we don't know what they are, even the packet doesn't say"

Another redditor by the name of u/TrevorPhilips brought up John Oliver's recent expose on food waste in America. Oliver's video shows how big food companies like KFC often have to throw out excess food instead of donating it to charity due to strict food safety laws. Here was the manager's response:

"We don't donate the food because we consider it unsafe to eat because it is at an unsafe temperature and beyond its use by time."

Redditor /U/fullysikora then asked a follow up:

"What happens if you KNOW you wont get all the product sold by a certain date? Do you secretly put it in some peoples drive-thru orders as a sort of bonus? I heard of my local hungry jacks/burger king doing this a few years back."

To which the manager responded:

No definitely not, if it's out of date it goes in the big, no matter how bad I feel, even if I'm throwing 50 pieces of chicken in the bin and 4 bags of lettuce, it has to be done.
