Sony Pictures has announced its line-up of 16 films through 2019. It will be composed of an interesting mix of new films, remakes and sequels. Included in the list are 'Bad Boys 3', 'Bad Boys 4', Ghostbusters, Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' and the remake of 'Jumanji'.
The 1995 fantasy movie will be in theatres on Christmas Day next year. There is not much information to go on yet, but it will be written by Zach Helm, the brains behind 'Stranger than Fiction' and 'New Magorium's Wonder Emporium'. The 1995 version featured Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst.
It takes 20 years to come up with a remake. Although in 2005, its 'spiritual sequel', Zathura, was shown in theatres. The film is based on the book of Chris Van Allsburg, the same author of the 'Jumanji' story.
'Jumanji' is a board game that 12-year old Alan Parrish was playing with his best friend Sarah. Alan gets trapped inside the game, and an adult Alan, played by Robin Williams, is released 26 years after when siblings Judy and Peter play the game. They search and eventually find Sarah, and the four resolve to finish playing the game to undo the destructions it has caused.
The original 'Jumanji' was a box-office hit, earning a worldwide gross of $ 262,797,240 or almost $ 263 million. It cost only $ 65 million to create.
There are no other details yet to the remake version. Kirsten Dunst played the role of Judy Shepherd, one of the siblings who found the board game. From that movie, the pretty young girl has gone to play other roles, most notable of all is Spider-Man. Meanwhile, lead star Robin Williams passed away in 2014 after committing suicide in his home in California. He was 63. He was suffering from Parkinson's and severe depression.
