Convicted rapist Gary Allen Irving was to be sentenced to prison in Massachusetts over 30 years ago, and the judge had given him two days to make arrangements at home when the convict went missing. Irving was on the Top Ten Most Wanted fugitives list in the state, but the search ended Wednesday night when he was caught in the state of Maine.
Going by the name "Gregg Irving," the man had lived quietly in the ensuing years, according to neighbors who said he sometimes shoveled snow for them in the winter. A stockpile of guns were found at his home, and he will likely be arraigned for illegal firearms possession as well as being a fugitive from justice.
Irving had been convicted of all three rape counts against him in Norfolk County, Mass., which included pushing a girl off a bike and raping her in a secluded area repeatedly. He also was convicted of forcing a victim into his car to comply with his demands at knifepoint. Irving found his victims by driving around, and then hid in waiting to pounce on them.
Although Irving denied being the same man, he was positively identified by a childhood scar on his chest. He was living with his wife and granddaughter when police found him.
Police did not comment about how they found the fugitive, but it was called "good old-fashioned police work."
