Sheridan Smith Pranks Her Fans with Fake 50 Shades of Grey Tweet

British actress Sheridan Smith cause quite the Internet buzz Monday when she announced on Twitter that she was going to play the role of Anastasia Steele in the "50 Shades of Grey" movie. Of course, Monday being April 1, it was all a joke.

"I'm so excited to tell you that I've been cast as the lead girl in 50 shades of grey opposite Eddie Redmayne," the British actress tweeted Monday morning. "Can't wait to start filming!"

It was followed by another tweet, confessing that it was all a prank in the spirit of the goofy holiday.

"In my dreams! Haha, I just got that in a minute before midday," Smith tweeted. "Happy April fools twits ;) Xxxxxxxx"

Smith is an an English actress known for her work on television as well as critically acclaimed roles in West End theater. She has won two Laurence Olivier awards in a row.

But, nonetheless, the tweet still got the hopes up of many fans who, apparently, had hoped to see Smith in the buzzed-about role of Anastasia Steele. Ever since the green light was given to turn the popular book into a movie, fans of the story haven't been able to get enough of all the rumors about which actress will play Steele and which actor will play Christian Grey.

A few fans, hoping to see Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in the roles, have even made fake movie trailers for "50 Shades of Grey" staring the couple and posted the videos on YouTube.

So Smith shouldn't have been too surprised when some people believed her April Fools Day tweet, and the tweet quickly got spread around the Internet among both surprised and excited fans.

"I'm crying laughing that some of u actually fell for that! Especially amused by @foundtain1987 @louiespence & @Ecclestonshire :D love ya's!!!" she tweeted.
