Ever since news broke that Marvel and Sony Pictures had agreed to share the rights to Spider-Man, the conversation surrounding the superhero has mostly centered on his age.
Disney and Marvel studios have said time and time again that their version of the iconic wall crawler will be considerably younger than Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's versions of the character. The studio reinforced this fact by signing 19 year old British actor Tom Holland to play the role of Peter Parker.
Thanks to a recent story published by Empire Magazine we finally have an official age for Marvel's Spider-Man. Director Jon Watts told the magazine that the character will be 15 years old when the story begins.
There are only so many times that you can kill Uncle Ben. I love the idea of making a coming-of-age high-school movie. We're really going to see Peter Parker in high school and get deeper into that side of it. He's just 15 now. Tom was pretty perfect. He's very athletic. He can actually do a backflip! If he didn't already capture the spirit of the character, with that on top the kid is Spider-Man".
The most recent Spider-Man films also focused on Spidey's High School years, but its cast members like Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone always seemed a little too old to play high schoolers.
The original Tobey Maguire trilogy focused more on his college years and time working at the Daily Bugle.
15 years old puts Tom Holland's Peter Parker at the start of high school life, so it's safe to say that the new batch of Spider-Man films will be firmly rooted in that period.
We can catch our first glimpse of Holland as the web slinger in Captain America: Civil War, which hits theatres next year.
