McDonald's Rolls Out Silver China Burger, Horrifies the Internet

When McDonald's announced that they are now serving the limited edition Modern China Burger, the collective reaction of the Internet was horror. Why? Well, to many, this grey-colored burger looks nothing close to appetizing. See it here.

Even in a region known for its colored burger buns, the Modern China Burger is exceptionally weird. Burger King Japan came out with an all-black burger, the Kuro Shogun, that was copied all over the world. The black buns are made using bamboo charcoal, the patties sprinkled with black pepper, and the sauce is made with squid ink, NDTV Food reported.

Burger King also came out with the Samurai Chicken, an all-red burger using doubanjiang spicy red bean paste for a "fiery edge." Many other colored buns can be found in burger joints from all over the continent. In the McDonald's case, mantou buns were used for the sickly grey color that got everyone talking. The burger itself is made of two pork patties, bacon, salad, and spicy Sichuan pepper ketchup, Independent reported.

The color has been described as everything from grey, to silver, to "industrial," and, most amusingly, Time Out Beijing likened the buns to clouds of pollution commonly found above the Chinese capital. Shanghaiist.com even called the buns "horrifying." Most of these gimmicks are coming out in time for Halloween, and the McDonald's one is no exception.

The stone-looking burger is available for a limited time only and can only be enjoyed until November 3. However, days after the initial shock about the burger's appearance had died down, McDonald's said that the burger is doing just fine in terms of sales. To be fair, Time Out Beijing also liked the burger's spicy Szechuan ketchup and would actually grade it as "surprisingly palatable."
