Paint Designed to Kill Infection-Causing Bacteria

Antibacterial paints are widely used in hospitals and healthcare facilities against the dangers you can't see.

Leading Paint Company Sherwin-Williams announced that it has come up a new paint that eliminates infection-causing bacteria.

In a statement by Chris Connor, chairman and chief executive, Sherwin-Williams, "Paint Shield is one of the most significant technological breakthroughs in our nearly 150 year history of innovation. By killing infectious pathogens on painted surfaces, Paint Shield is a game-changing advancement in coatings technology."

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency certified that Paint Shield doesn't just decrease the growth of common microbes but has been proven to kill 99.9 percent of Staph (Staphylococcus aureus) and E. coli (Escherichia coli) bacteria on painted surfaces as stated by Steve Revnew, senior vice president of product innovation for Sherwin-Williams in an interview.

Paint Shield is ideal for medical facilities, locker rooms, schools, daycare centers, hotels, homes and cruise ships and any public places.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says healthcare-associated infections are one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found that one in 25 U.S. patients contracts at least one infection while under hospital care.

Revnew further said, "Continued progress in combating HAIs will require a broad array of measures, including passive methods that are less dependent on human intervention.  By continuing to kill MRSA and other bacteria, even after repeated contamination, Paint Shield offers hospitals and other facilities an important new tool to help in the fight against the spread of HAIs."  This denotes that Paint Shield provides an entirely new way to help prevent the spread bacteria that can trigger hospital-acquired infections.

Paint Shield will come in the company's eg-shel finish and is expected to be available in 590 of the most popular colors   in Sherwin-Williams stores in the United States starting in the first quarter of 2016 at $84.99 a gallon.
