Germany Insisted Don't Be Scared of Sausages, Reaction To WHO Study

Germany's agriculture minister said on Tuesday that sausages, like sunshine, are beneficial in moderation. This is the initial reaction of Germany after a report from World Health Organization (WHO) that warns everyone from eating processed meats because it is carcinogenic to humans.

The report indicated that processed meats are carcinogenic to humans, causing cancer, and it is already to be found in C -causing list along with tobacco and asbestos. This drew attention in the world's highest consumer of such product, Germany.

Christian Schmidt, food and agriculture minister emailed to Reuters that,  "No one should be afraid if they eat a bratwurst (sausage) every now and then. People are being wrongly unsettled when eating meat is put on the same level as asbestos or tobacco."

Experts of WHO concluded in their study that consumption of processed meats such as hot dogs, sausages and bacons can cause colorectal cancer in humans, and red meat is as well a possible cause of the disease.

Schmidt compared sausages to sunshine, which he insisted that it had positive result if not take to overindulgence. "It always depends on the amount. Too much is unhealthy," he explained.

Germans are known to consume more processed meat, 17.2kg each per year, compared to any other nations. They can also give more awareness to meat alternatives in the future in accordance to the WHO report, according to analysts Euromonitor International.

"German consumers are expected to keep their taste for meat, but with ongoing research and development, meat substitutes are expected to further improve and become more varied both in taste and texture," Euromonitor International analyst Wiebke Schoon explained further. "This means they may certainly turn out to become a valid alternative for consumers, who, whatever their reasons, want to reduce their meat consumption in the long term."
