According to ABC News 10, the current drought in California will have a big impact on your wallet. Experts speculate that for every 100 dollars spent in the market, one can expect to see an increase of 10 to 15 dollars due to the drought.
The US Bureau of Reclamation has told farmers that they will not be able to receive irrigation from the state, as the water supply has been too impacted by the drought. This is a decrease from last year's already reduced water allotment.
The reduced water will limit crop growth, and impact costs for farmers to feed their animals. Produce and meat will certainly spike in price, due to increased scarcity of both products. Many farmers will be forced to leave barren fields unplanted, and it will hit right in the pocket of the consumer.
"We also have lettuce that typically would be in the ground right now. That wasn't planted," says Gayle Holman from the Westlands Water District. "And we also have melons. We're used to having an abundance of cantaloupe and watermelon and quite frankly that won't be available to the consumer."
