Sweater Worn By Kurt Cobain Sells For $137,000

The sweater of the late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, which he wore during the band's taping for MTV's 'Unplugged' in 1993 was reportedly sold for $173,000 in one auction event held in Los Angeles, TIME reported.

On Saturday, November 7, the olive green cardigan was purchased twice of its estimated price ranging from $40,000 to $60,000 in the big auction affair labelled as 'Julien's Auctions' 2015 Icons and Idols Rock'n'Roll'. Julien's says that the item was obtained from "a close friend of the Cobain family".

The sweater description at Julien's Auctions web site reads, "The Manhattan brand sweater is a blend of acrylic, mohair and Lycra with five-button closure (one button absent), with two exterior pockets, a burn hole and discoloration near left pocket and discoloration on right pocket, size medium."

Besides Kurt Cobain's sweater, other Nirvana memorabilias sold were a gold record from the band's third and last album 'In Utero' and a platinum record from the band's 1991 record-breaking album 'Nevermind'.

Reports say that the said auction event was also set to sell a lock from Cobain's hair, but the item was later quickly pulled out after it has drawn controversy.

Other items sold at Julien's are a $600,000 gold leaf piano owned by Elvis Presley and a $2.4 million 1962 Gibson J-160E guitar owned from John Lennon, which was used to record a few of the Beatles' hit tracks including, 'Love Me Do' and 'P.S I Love You'.

Kurt Cobain was the lead singer-guitarist and songwriter of Nirvana. He formed the band with Krist Novoselic and made it as part of the Seattle music scene in 1985, which led to their first album 'Bleach' released via Sub Pop in 1989.

In the latter years of his career, Cobain went through heroin addiction, depression and illness. Reports say that the deceased musician also struggled to cope with fame and personal pressures around him and his wife and fellow musician, Courtney Love.

Nirvana with Cobain as the songwriter, has sold over 25 million across the United States and 75 million worldwide. Last year, Kurt Cobain had been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside band mate Noveselic and Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl.
