John Oliver and Wife Kate Norley Welcome a Baby Boy

Comedian John Oliver and wife Kate Norley recently welcomed their first child.

An HBO rep confirmed that the 38-year-old English television personality and Norley are proud parents to a son, telling E! News, "John and his wife Kate are parents of a baby boy. Everybody is happy and healthy."

The Last Week Tonight Host, Oliver, has been very vocal about maternity leave in the past.

Maternity leave now often called parental or family leave, is the time a mother (or father) takes off from work for the birth or adoption of a child.

Actual paid "maternity leave" — while the norm in almost all countries — is unusual in the United States, although some enlightened companies do offer new parents paid time off of up to six weeks in some cases.

Most likely, you'll use a combination of short-term disability (STD), sick leave, vacation, personal days, and unpaid family leave during your time away from work.

"What that means is that 40 percent of workers are not covered under the federal law," Oliver noted. "So if a worker with no paid leave goes into labor at work, she better hope it's on her lunch hour and that her co-workers don't mind if the break room gets a bit messy."

Oliver and Norley, an Iraq War veteran who served as an Army medic, met in 2008, and married in October 2011.

The late night talk show host praised his wife for her service in an interview with the New York Daily News on Tuesday, November 10.

Kate's basic training took place in Ft. Jackson, in South Carolina and got her medical training at Ft. Sam Houston in Texas.

After completing her training, she was assigned to Fr. Hood in Texas where she took on desert-warfare training in the Mojave Desert, CA..

In 2003 she was deployed to Iraq and was on a combat-tour as a medic for sixteen months. She was stationed in Fallujah, Sadr City, and Ramadi.

She was awarded the Combat Medic Badge for her service of providing medical care while under fire.

Oliver came to fame as a comedian and joined The Daily Show with Jon Stewart in 2006.

He played Dr. Ian Duncan on the comedy Community, and has hosted Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO since 2014. The program airs Sundays at 11 p.m. ET.
