Gym Tells Woman to Cover Up Because Her Toned Body Intimidates Other Members

How fit is too fit? A woman working out at Planet Fitness was told to cover up her midriff during her workout. When she asked why, the gym told her that her toned physique was intimidating other members, according to The Daily Mail.

The California woman, Tiffany Austin, was working out at a Bay Area gym after recovering from a recent car accident, according to KTVU. Her doctor recommended that she start walking more, so she decided to start working out at Planet Fitness. She was about 15 minutes into her first workout on a treadmill at the gym, when a staff member told her to put on a shirt that covered her midriff. Austin had been wearing a tank that exposed her stomach.

Austin was surprised by the request, but actually hopped off of the treadmill and went to get a shirt. That's when another staff member approached her about her body, according to KTVU. That's when Austin went to the manager, asked for a refund, and left.

According to Liberty Voice, Planet Fitness has a commitment to "No Gymtimidation." Yet this latest incident seems to hint otherwise. Austin felt singled out and intimidated--for her fit body, of all things. "It seems punishing those who are fit or toned would be hypocritical of any gym," writes the Liberty Voice. "That would be the equivalent of a college expelling a student for being too smart, or an employer firing an employee for working too hard."

Austin stated that she felt both intimidated and harassed, according to The Daily Mail. It seems that even though Planet Fitness prides itself on making gym members feel comfortable, some members aren't receiving that experience.
