An Oklahoma girl has broken the all-time national record for Girl Scout cookies sold, beating the previous record by just 10 boxes.
The Associated Press reported that 12-year-old Katie Francis of Oklahoma City broke a nearly 30-year-old record for Girl Scout cookie sales with 18,107 boxes sold. This shattered the record of 18,000 boxes sold by Elizabeth Brinton in the '80s.
Francis said she sold the boxes by asking anyone who crossed her path to buy some of her cookies. The young girl sold the boxes in a seven week period. Francis set a goal to sell 20,000 boxes.
Last Month, Francis told The Oklahoman newspaper that she has only three ingredients to accomplishing the large number of sales. She invests a lot of time and commitment into her sales. Along with "asking everyone she met to buy."
USA Today reported that Francis' mother, DeLee Francis, called her daughter a "go-getter" and added that she worked countless hours. The sixth grader was crowned the national top seller in 2013, with 12,428 boxes of cookies sold. In previous years, she sold 2,004 boxes of cookies, then 7,482 boxes.
"I'm good at what I do," Francis said. "Cookie selling is just so much fun to me. I just love doing it. I love meeting all kinds of people and setting a goal and achieving it."
Girl Scout cookies are sold by troops across the country as a way to make money to fund trips and activities. Her troop will receive a share of the proceeds from the fundraiser. They plan donate to breast cancer research.
