‘Tomb Raider' Movie Reboot in The Works! Latest Details Revealed

The "Tomb Raider "movie reboot is finally moving forward. A recent report claims that the film has finally settled on a director, and is in negotiations with a new writer.

Roar Uthaug, a Norwegian director who helmed the disaster drama, "The Wave," has been confirmed as the new director for Warner Bros.' "Tomb Raider" reboot. In so doing, "Tomb Raider" would be Uthaug's first English film, after directing several Norwegian films.

Included in Uthaug's film repertoire are horror movie "Cold Prey," children's film "Magic Silver" and action movie "Escape." A previous report noted that other directors on the shortlist for the "Tomb Raider " reboot are Catherine Hardwicke (Twlight), Mimi Leder (Deep Impact) and Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the writer under negotiations to pen the script for the "Tomb Raider "movie reboot is Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Transformers 5).

Comicbook Resources reported that the "Tomb Raider" movie reboot has been in development since 2011. In February, the project was supposedly fast-tracked as Evan Daugherty of "Divergent" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay. At the same time, Warner Bros. has went aboard with the project as co-financer and distributor.

Other writers who worked on earlier drafts of the "Tomb Raider "movie reboot include Marti Noxon, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.

Original target release date of the film had been 2013 in order to overlap with the video game reboot "Tomb Raider" from Square Enix. For some reason, the film didn't follow through.

There had been two movie adaptations of "Tomb Raider," both of which starred Angelina Jolie. She played archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft in both "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" in 2001 and "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life" in 2003. Both reportedly grossed $432 million worldwide combined.

The 2001 film remains the highest grossing video game adaptation ever in the US to date. Because the 2003 film was a disappointment in the box office and Jolie didn't want to reprise the role, a third film never went into fruition.

According to Game Spot, details for the "Tomb Raider " movie reboot remain unknown, apart from THR's report saying that it will "detail Lara Croft's first adventure." Four companies will be collaborating on the new film reboot - GK Films, Warner Bros, MGM, and Square Enix.

As for the "Tomb Raider" movie reboot cast and release date, those details also remain unknown.
