Ronda Rousey Suspended: Why She Can’t Fight For 6 Months After Loss To Holly Holm in UFC 193

UFC has suspended Ronda Rousey from fighting for the next six months, as the MMA fighter is being forced to sit out and rest for medical reasons after suffering injuries in her November 14 fight.

Ronda Rousey has been medically suspended in the wake of her knockout loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193.

Medical suspensions aren’t uncommon and designed to protect fighters from returning to the octagon too soon. Rousey’s suspension also has a kicker that could extend her suspension to 180 days if she doesn’t pass a CT scan.

News of the layoff for Rousey came via MixedMartialArts.com. She will not be able to fight in the sport again until mid-2016 unless her CT scan comes back clear. Additionally, the former champion cannot have contact for 45 days or fight inside the next 60 days.

Ronda got completely pummeled in her fight against Holly at UFC 193, and although the exact nature of her injuries hasn’t been disclosed, it was evident that she took some brutal shots to the head.

Rousey was knocked out in the second round by the former world champion boxer following a thunderous kick and a flurry of punches. Holm had outclassed Rousey throughout the early stages of the fight, tagging her opponent with a lot of heavy blows.

The formerly undefeated champion was hospitalized for observation after the match, and it’s reported that she’ll likely need plastic surgery on her lip, which was split open. But as previously reported, Ronda had already planned to take some time off before getting back into her sport, so this will likely be a welcome rest for her.

Ronda Rousey lost for the first time as an MMA fighter, via second-round KO to Holly Holm, in the main event of UFC 193. Both she and her head coach Edmond Tarverdyan have indicated in statements that the plan is for her to take time to rest. She’s fought three times in the past three months, with a very short turnaround from her fight in August to this past one.
