Police are investigating a possible sexual assault of a teen that may be caused by an app on the girl's phone.
The principal of the Ninth Grade Academy, John Osborne compared cellphones to a loaded gun. He said cellphones are extremely lethal if it's used inappropriately. He also said that the use of cellphones among kids can sometimes lead to unfavorable results such as being arrested, bullied, and worse, being led into the hands of child molesters. He said that technology is meant to be used as a tool for learning, but sometimes there are lots of temptations that children may not be able to resist.
There was an incident, which can be a very concrete example of temptation is when children try to record fights, and other things kids their age should not be doing. There is one incident in White County, where teens from the Ninth Grade Academy wrestling team were arrested for video recording cheerleaders from the same school using their phones through the ceiling of the girl's locker room.
There was also another event that concerned Osborne. One teen recorded a victim of a car accident. Osborne recalled that when the victim got out of the car, his leg was dangling and this kid suddenly videotaped it instead of offering to help.
They immediately told the kid that what he was doing was wrong. As if videotaping isn't enough, he later found out that the recording was posted on social media. He said it's not just about taking pictures or video-taping a specific event; it's also posting it on social media that poses a bigger problem.
These incidents mentioned above are just some of the dangers kids can get themselves into. Recently, the number of cyberbullying incidents has greatly increased and this caused an immediate concern to authorities. Cyberbullying is known to be the cause of teenage suicides, and these days it is causing school sexting scandals are on the rise.
So far these incidents were reported in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Tennessee, but I won't be surprised if there will be a sudden increase in reported event.
