‘The Social Network’ and ‘American Ultra’ Star Jesse Eisenberg Angers Film Critics with The New Yorker Piece

Jesse Eisenberg wrote a short story for The New Yorker that has spawned the ire of many film critics, according to The Guardian. In this satirical piece which was aptly entitled 'An Honest Film Review' Eisenberg created a fictional character who was tasked to do a review on a new movie.

In the story though this critic only wrote about his experience in watching the movie and didn't really talk much about the movie itself. The long and unnecessary ride to the theatre had a spot in the critic's movie review, alongside his thoughts on the studio girl and an actor in the movie who he thinks is two or three inches shorter than he is.

Many film critics viewed the piece as a direct attack on them and their profession and took to Twitter to vent out their disappointment and frustration over 'The Social Network' star and his piece. There were various tweets against the The New Yorker piece and many bashed Eisenberg for having "lazy assumptions" and some considered him to be a "ruthless villain."

There were also various posts online that showed the writers' dismay over the piece and its author. One writer said in his article "At the risk of criticising Eisenberg's criticism of film criticism, the piece is crushingly unfunny."

Another writer quipped "Huh? Wha...? What did we do? By and large, movie actor and author Jesse Eisenberg has been well-liked and even rather loved by the critics... Sadly, this week we realised that our feelings for him are very far from reciprocated."

At least one writer agrees with the 'American Ultra' star though saying that there is some truth to the actor's implications from the piece and that there are critics like the one in 'An Honest Film Review' that actually exist. The writer concluded that perhaps the reason that many film critics reacted so negatively to the short story is because it actually "hit too close to home."
