'Barbershop 3: The Next Cut' Trailer Features Nicki Minaj and Tyga [WATCH]

By the time Barbershop 3: The Next Cut hits theaters, it will have been 12 years since the previous comedy sequel hit theaters, and 11 years since the spin-off Beauty Shop with Queen Latifah arrived. But the new sequel aims to combine both worlds.

As if the lineup of actors in the Barbershop movies wasn’t amazing enough for the first two films, Tyga and Nicki Minaj have been added to the cast for the third installment, Barbershop: The Next Cut! They’re both featured in the first trailer from the new movie, acting alongside the series’ veterans Ice Cube, Eve, and Cedric the Entertainer.

The old and new characters teamed up to fight the increasing presence of gang violence on the streets of Chicago and around the barbershop itself.

The film, which started out as a harmless comedy franchise, is surprisingly tackling a pretty serious issue. But as you’ll see in the first Barbershop 3 trailer, this isn’t like full-packed action film, there is still plenty of lighthearted comedy to be had.

In the film, Nicki plays a sassy hairdresser named Draya who works in the barbershop while Tyga plays a guy named Whack MC. It seems Tyga’s character might be part of the bad guy group in the movie, as he is shown right after Calvin (Ice Cube) mentions how dangerous it is in their city.

Although this is the first Barbershop role for both Nicki and Tyga, it isn’t the first time we’ve seen the rappers in a feature film.

Nicki played Cameron Diaz‘s assistant in 2014’s romantic comedy The Other Woman, and Tyga made an appearance in this summer’s crime comedy drama Dope as De’Andre.

Barbershop 3: The Next Cut is directed by Malcolm D. Lee with a script from Black-ish series creator Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver. The comedy sequel hits theaters on April 15th, 2016.
