Piracy Is a Serious Crime: Czech Man Convicted

Piracies, in all forms, have been around for quite some time. In earlier times, people just didn't pay attention closely. But in this time and age, there are different laws protecting consumers and companies from Cybercrimes. This includes software piracy.

A man from the Czech Republic, named only as Jakub F, has been convicted of software piracy. He reportedly provided copies of software media on filesharing sites.

There are quite a number of firms which are affected, BBC News mentioned. The total financial damage is quite heavy, and it could amount to thousands. Microsoft, HBO Europe, Sony Music and Twentieth Century Fox are involved along with Microsoft valuing losses at around £148,000.

The Czech criminal court has ruled that the financial penalty should be settled either in civil proceedings or out of court. The 30-year-old decided for the out-of-court settlement with the firms. The firms all came up with the decision not to sue the pirate.

However, the firms set up a condition for Jakub. The companies said they will accept a small payment and also a film production.

In order to fulfill the out of court settlement, he must create a video depicting awareness about the concept of piracy. The firms' condition is for the video to have at least 200,000 views in two months. This is to make sure that Jakub will share the video as much as possible.

There is a possibility that the firms can take the issue as a civil case for damages in the event that he fails to reach this target. In the video, Jakub warned the other pirates that they can also be caught. "The Story of my Piracy" projects the importance of not participating is such 'small crimes.' It initially showed how he enjoyed the process of pirating software but in the end, paid for a much bigger consequence.
