George Lucas Says Star Wars is His 'Ex'

As the release date of Star Wars: The Force Awakens draws near, many fans are wondering how the franchise will do, now that it is no longer under the guidance of George Lucas. On December 18, the world will finally get a glimpse of a Star Wars film made without the involvement of the man who dreamt it all up.

In a candid interview with the Washington Post, Lucas shared his thoughts on the future of the franchise and what it's like to see his prized creation under the stewardship of his new creators.

He likened his departure from the franchise to a divorce, admitting that he had to let it go in order for it to go on.

"Now I'm faced with this awkward reality, which is fine. I gotta go to the wedding. My ex will be there, my new wife will be there, but I'm going to have to take a very deep breath and be a good person and sit through it and just enjoy the moment, because it is what it is and it's a conscious decision that made."

Lucas also admitted that he didn't want to be involved in the filmmaking process of the Force Awakens so that director J.J. Abrams could realize his personal vision for the movie.

"There is no such thing as working over someone's shoulder," Said Lucas. "You're either the dictator or you're not.

"I knew that I couldn't be involved. All I'd do is make them miserable. I'd make myself miserable. It would probably ruin a vision - J.J. has a vision, and it's his vision."

Last week, Lucas admitted to Vanity Fair that the intense scrutiny he faced as the face of Star Wars ultimately lead to his decision to sell the franchise to Disney.
