The master of Broadway musicals, Andrew Lloyd Webber, has done it again with the musical adaptation of the 2003 movie called 'School of Rock.' The film had actor Jack Black as the lead star who faked his way being a temp professor that eventually led him to teaching rock music to middle school students. It was a hit and it is probably the reason why Webber thought it would be a great idea to recreate it live on stage. Based on the reviews from critically acclaimed publications known in America, it was a success.
Jack Black was not casted to reprise his role on the movie as Dewey Finn, but actor Alex Brightman did a great job playing the part. A little bit of Jack Black's image was there, but he definitely gave it his own spin on the character, balancing his role with the many talented kids he is working on stage.
Variety noticed the songs and the script written were very child-friendly and thanks to Julian Fellowes (Downtown Abbey, Gosford Park) and his penning skills, this musical became a hit. His skills in writing for children's music like this doesn't come as a surprise since he is also the man behind the classic 'Mary Poppins' and 'Little Lord Fauntleroy.'
Diving into the lyrics of this musical, Webber did a great job of hiring Glenn Slater since his resume was already filled with his works from Disney from a long time ago. This was directed by Laurence Connor who for some reason could somewhat read the mind of Webber with regards to how he would like the whole play done having a childlike vibe, without eliminating professional musicianship.
There are songs that they decided to add that were not included in the movie and it is another reason why everyone should watch it. Congratulations to the cast and crew of 'School of Rock The Musical!'
