How Did Kylo Ren Help In The Creation Of Captain Phasma In 'The Force Awakens?'

Captain Phasma is undoubtedly one of the coolest-looking villains in the 'Star Wars' franchise. In addition to being played by 'Game of Thrones' star Gwendoline Christie, the character's costume also has an awesome origin story as told by 'The Force Awakens' director J.J. Abrams.

According to GeekTyrant, J.J. Abrams recently explained how Captain Phasma came to be during a 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' press junket. The director was asked which character had the most difficult costume design to create and Abrams had a surprising response.

"The most difficult one was Kylo Ren," Abrams admitted before sharing how painstaking it was to find the right design for the villain.

"We went through I don't know how many hundreds and probably thousands of iterations and versions, and one of the great things about that was, the costume for Captain Phasma was designed. That was actually pitched as a Kylo Ren costume originally."

That's right, Gwendoline Christie's chrome-plated Stormtrooper was originally seen as a costume for Kylo Ren. However, J.J. Abrams explained that although it looked awesome, it just didn't seem right for the Darth Vader fanboy.

"For story reasons it didn't make sense and didn't work, but we suddenly realized, 'Oh my God, this is one of the greatest-looking costumes I've ever seen.' And he, then she, became one of my favorite characters in the movie," he said.

In the end, finding the right look for Kylo Ren was decided because of the mask.

"The design of Kylo Ren was the most difficult one and when we finally saw the mask and the beginning of that design, it was really instantly clear that was the winner," Abrams said.

The design for Kylo Ren's costume clearly reflects his admiration (and admittedly frenzied worship) of Darth Vader, while the Captain Phasma costume stands out for being a shiny Stormtrooper with a matching cape. Nevertheless, both villains have already attained a cult icon status before the release of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' on December 18.
