There is a huge danger that awaits the human race if the use of antibiotics is not stopped in the industry of agriculture. This causes drug resistance to those people who are in need of it. The Guardian reported that this phenomenon in the food industry must be banned according to David Cameron.
Unfortunately, this practice is being used all over the world and it would eventually cause people, to no longer respond to treatments if this practice persists. The numbers are already rising when it comes to the use of antibiotics to humans and it is shocking that the use in animals is now leveling with its rate.
It is given that the right way and amount of the use of antibiotics for treatment with animals is only reasonable and could even be beneficiary to those who are eating them. On the other hand, the abuse in using them in animals would result to the opposite. Some would inject antibiotics to animals in large amount and some would even do it to prevent the whole flock from developing infections. Another alarming use of antibiotics in agriculture is for the animals to gain weight rapidly.
There is indeed a disturbing number of companies who are applying this to their flocks and herd. An expert in the field named Jim O'Neil said, "I find it staggering that in many countries, most of the consumption of antibiotics is in animals rather than humans. This creates a big resistance risk for everyone, which was highlighted by the recent Chinese finding of resistance to colistin, an important last-resort antibiotic that has been used extensively in animals."
Based on the review released, he also added, "As we've highlighted, most of the scientific research provides evidence to support curtailing antibiotic use in agriculture. It's time for policymakers to act on this. We need to radically reduce global use of antibiotics, and to do this we need world leaders to agree to an ambitious target to lower levels, along with restricting the use of antibiotics important to humans."
It is time to take action on this problem before it is too late.
