Ghostbusters, Top Gun and L.A. Confidential were Included in the National Film Registry

The 1984 Ivan Reitman blockbuster "Ghostbusters" is one of 25 films being named Wednesday, December 16 to the 2015 National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

Director Ivan Reitman from Ghostbusters movie said the film's inclusion was "an honour."

Reitman shared to BBC.com. "Making Ghostbusters was one of the great joys of my life,"

"It's an honour to know that a movie that begins with a ghost in a library, now has a spot on the shelves of the Library of Congress.

Ghostbusters is a supernatural horror comedy film and was released in the United States on June 8, 1984.

It was a critical and commercial success, receiving a positive response from critics and audiences and grossing US$242 million in the United States and more than $295 million worldwide.

Among the more recent movies also making the list are the 1986 Tom Cruise high-flying action drama film "Top Gun," and the film was an instant blockbuster and remains a cultural 1980s touchstone.

The 1994 drama film "The Shawshank Redemption" about a prison friendship based on a Stephen King story, were one of the lists of movies also.

The most recent registry addition is the critically lauded film noir "L.A. Confidential (1997), bridesmaid to "Titanic'' at that year's Oscars.

Acting librarian of Congress David Mao announced the roster of films deserving to be preserved because of "their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance."

The National Film Preservation Act, the 25 pictures selected each year must be at least 10 years old.
