Tuna Canners Recall 34,000 Cases for Probable Contamination

With three particular UPC codes that were delivered in February and dispersed nationally, San Diego-based Bumble Bee is reviewing 31,579 instances of canned chunk light fish. Tri-Union Seafoods' review includes 2,745 cases or 107,280 cans of Chicken of the Sea 5 oz. canned chunk light fish in oil and 5 oz. canned chunk light fish in water that was sold across the nation in the middle of February and March.

The greater part of the reviewed items was canned in the same Chicken of the Sea facility in Lyons, Ga., Chicken of the Sea said. Both organizations said the reviews are identified with deviations in the business disinfection procedure and could possibly bring about contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens, as indicated by the review. In particular, Tri-Union Seafoods said it started its review in light of the fact that the fish might have been undercooked due to equipment breakdown.

"The health and safety of our consumers are our No. 1 priority," Tri-Union Seafoods President Shue Wing Chan mentioned in a statement. "As soon as we discovered the issue, we took immediate steps to initiate this voluntary recall, alerting our retail customers that received the product and instructing them to remove it from store shelves."

Bumble bee added that it issued the recall out of an abundance of alert because of the conceivable under-handling of the affected items found by the co-packer during its standard quality review. The organization said it was working closely with the Food and Drug Administration and, in addition, the agreement packing facility to rapidly expel the item from racks.

Bumble bee said clients who purchased its recalled items should discard them, however, keep the label or other evidence of purchase for a discount. Tri-Union Seafoods said clients can give back the canned fish to the store where they bought it for a full discount.
