Serrano Chile Peppers - 6,215 pounds of Fresh Serrano Chile Peppers which are believed to be contaminated with Salmonella are being recalled by Bailey Farms, Inc. of Oxford, NC, Food Safety News reports.
The peppers were allegedly distributed to Meijer Inc. where customers from Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio may have bought it for the period of Oct. 14 to 19.
Same batch of Serrano Chile Peppers were also being recalled to various dealers including Merchants Distributors Inc., Publix Super Markets Inc., Harris Teeter, Walmart, Food Lion, Flavor 1st Growers and Packers, US Foods, Military Produce Group, LLC, John Vena Inc. and C&S Wholesalers.
Salmonella is caused by various types of bacteria and affecting the intestinal tract. Children, older people and people with low immune-system are most likely to acquire Salmonellosis. Symptoms develop later ranging from fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
On Oct.13, Michigan Department of Agriculture randomly tested a warehouse in Lansing, MI. Bailey Farms and found out that the sample appeared to be positive for Salmonella. With the result, it is presumed that the remaining Serrano Chile Peppers distributed earlier were also contaminated with bacteria.
Since Bailey Farms advise for a recall, several stores have reported removal of fresh Serrano Chile Peppers on their shelves including Bi-Lo Holdings LLC, Giant Food LLC and Ahold-owned Stop & Shop Supermarket Co.
The said retailers confirmed that they didn't get any reported cases of poisoning or illness following the recall. Meanwhile, Bailey Farms is coordinating with North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to further examine where the contamination came from.
Serrano Chile Peppers from Bailey Farms are being sold in large number of stores, shops and retailers. Aside from these peppers, Oregano, peanut butter, almond butter and black pepper were also recalled in the recent months due to possible Salmonella contamination.
