Aaliyah Biopic: Former R&B Aaliyah’s TV Movie, Why Is It So Controversial?

Did you watch Aaliyah biopic, "Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B" that was slated on Lifetime Saturday, Nov. 15?

There were so many controversies surrounding the showing of Aaliyah biopic. The movie that was premiered Saturday is geared to honor the princess of R&B Aaliyah, but it seems a lot of haters including Aaliyah's family are not favoring its premier.

"Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B" produced by Lifetime is about the life of the promising artist Aaliyah who died in a fatal Bahamas plane crash at the age of 22 in 2001. Actress Alexandra Shipp, 23, portrayed the role of Aaliyah in Aaliyah biopic much-anticipated TV movie.

What are the controversies that almost impede Aaliyah's biopic TV movie?

First and foremost, the biopic was contradicted by Aaliyah's family. Aaliyah's former manager, Barry Hankerson and Aaliyah's uncle reported that they can't permit the showing of Aaliyah's biopic for two reasons:

Lifetime has not consulted Aalliyah's family before the TV movie was made and second, they believed that Aaliyah's life deserve a larger audience and not just shown on TV.

Since the TV movie was not approved by the family of the former R&B princess, Lifetime was not able to get music rights for Aaliyah's music.

What is Aaliyah's biopic for without her music?

This was also the issue mentioned by Zendaya Coleman, who first played the role of Aaliyah in the TV movie, but later dropped her role.

"The main reasons were that the production value wasn't there, there were complications with the music rights, and I just felt like it wasn't being handled delicately considering the situation," Zendaya Coleman claimed in her Instagram video.

With the lack of Aaliyah's true music in the TV movie, Lifetime just concentrated on the rumored relationship of Aaliyah's first producer, R. Kelly and Aaliyah.

Aaliyah was just 15 that time and R. Kelly was already 27 when they were allegedly rumored to be married secretly and were just annuled due to her young age. But there were no claims that the two had admitted the allegations.

One thing to wait for in the movie is the secret love that happened between the former R&B princess and R. Kelly.

"The family is not happy that the movie is being done but we did it so tastefully, I think the family would be proud," Wendy Williams, one of the movie's executive producers, stated.

Aaliyah, named as Aaliyah Dana Haughton in real life was only 22 when she met a tragic end along with eight others in a 2001 plane crash in the Bahamas right after filming a music video.

So do you think Aaliyah biopic by Lifetime has the right to be shown?
