Food Means Medicine, Lee Memorial Health System Improves Cafeteria

The Lee Memorial Health System has announced that they believe food is very important in the recovery of patients in their hospital so they are really working on making their cafeteria be different and defy the generalization of people that hospital food is not really appetizing.

Due to this, staff from neighboring hospitals actually visits the establishment just to eat and enjoy the food service in their cafeteria.

In fact, the Lee Memorial Health System has been named as the Innovator of the Year by the Food Management Magazine as they recognized the noncommercial food service that the officials in the hospital have done in order to advance the industry regarding the said aspect.

The improvements in the cafeteria reportedly were done gradually and they are serving foods that are of lower calorie and with higher nutrients. They have also introduced plant-based foods that are fro locally grown produce and they have minimized serving sugary beverages.

The cafeteria's vibe is likened to restaurants and there are also made-to-order menus that have a wide variation of food choices in order to satisfy the taste of the customers. Due to this, patients and visitors eat more healthy foods.

Patients are the main target of the hospital as they cater to a wide range of ages as well as illnesses so they pressed that it is very important to monitor their food intake based on what their body needs.

To better ensure that the hospital serves the right food in line with the orders of doctors, the Food & Nutrition Services have weighed in on the ideas of what to serve.

Another feature of the hospital is that they offer patients on-demand meal service as they have set up a call center from 7 a.m. top 7 p.m. The hospital pressed that they would like to let the patient have full access, control and choice over what they eat.
