Facebook down for 40 minutes made people in the United States to mingle and chat not on the social media but in real. The first longest outage of Facebook since 2010, users of the popular worldwide Facebook and Instagram were stunned and unable to post their 'selfies' and photos due to technical issues.

Early Tuesday, around 6:10 GMT, Facebook, down greeted their millions of users with a message that says "Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can." downdetector.com reported that it affected vast of U.S., Asia, New Zealand and Australia.

Facebook was not the only social networking sites that experienced technical problem. Instagram, its subsidiary was also inaccessible the same time. While Lizard Squad, a hacking group claimed responsibility for the technical problem, Facebook confirmed that issue was not due to hacking.

Facebook down issue was contradicted by Facebook officials saying that it was not the result of third party attack. They stated that the technical issues happened after introducing some changes that altered their configuration systems.

The Independent noted while Facebook down for 40 minutes, there were reports that the matchmaking application Tinder and instant messaging Hipchat were also inaccessible. However, Facebook-owned mobile messaging app WhatsApp was not affected at all.

At the height of Facebook down time, users turned to Twitter and created hashtag #facebookdown to air their frustrations and talk about the most controversial issue of the hour.

Gizmodo reported that Facebook down at the same time that MySpace and AIM were also not accessible. The good news is that, all the sites are now working well without interruptions.

Facebook down for 40 minutes is considered the longest outage since 2010. In that year, the outage lasted for two hours and Facebook regarded it as "the worst outage we've had in over four years," The Telegraph reported.

When Facebook was down, an estimated 98 million posts were missed according to the activity data in 2013. Facebook has 864 million daily active users and 1.25 billion monthly active users as of end of Sept. 2014.
