Happy Earth Day - 5 Tips To Eat Green

Earth Day is not just about enjoying the beauty of the earth. It is about reaffirming our commitment to preserve and hand it down to our children.

Here we suggest 5 eating tips to celebrate and honor the special day of our planet. By following these rules, you will take one step forward to preserve the beautiful earth.

1. Get seasonal fruits and vegetables
Seasonal fruits and vegetables are less likely to contain harmful pesticides. Look for spring gems like asparagus, rhubarb, blueberries, cabbage, cauliflower, mushrooms and peas.

2. Visit the nearest farmer's market
Eating local supports your economy and involves fewer miles traveled and fewer pollutants emitted to get dinner on your plate. Spending your money locally means you can help to keep working farms viable, and preserve the scenery of your town.

3. Buy produce grown organically and fish harvested sustainably
You can buy produce grown organically, such as organic wheat and rice. Organic foods are produced without synthetic growth hormones, genetically engineered organisms, antibiotics, chemical fertilizers or manmade chemical pesticides that harm the mother nature. Also, buy fish harvested sustainably, such as striped bass and wild salmon.

4. Eat less meat
Livestock accounts for 18% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, according to the United Nations. Americans eat meats three quarter-pounders a day. If each of us cut the equivalent of one hamburger from our daily diet, it would be like taking half million cars off the road.

5. Start gardening
When you spend your own food in your garden, there will be no gas emission to go to a market. You can also plan your garden to be part of a backyard landscape so that birds, butterflies, bees and other wildlife can come. Gardening is a good way to have conversation with the friends of the earth.
