According to a new research, eating whole grain cereals and cereal fiber could in fact add years to your life.

In the recent study held at the Harvard Public School of Health has found that a diet consisting of whole grain cereals and cereal fiber could help decrease risk to premature death caused by different chronic diseases including respiratory disease, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

"Our study indicates that intake of whole grains and cereal fiber may reduce the risk of all-cause mortality and death from chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory disease," lead researcher Lu Qi said in a statement.

Daily Mail cited that the study conducted by the researchers from the Harvard Public School of Health research claimed that an average daily consumption of 34 grams (1.2 ounces) of whole grains brings 17 percent less risk of premature death as compared to those who were eating lesser whole grains.

The research considered the differences in various factors including smoking, physical activity, health, and obesity.

 The study further proved that high fiber diet leads to 11 percent diminished risk of death due to respiratory disease, 48 percent fall in the risk of diabetes and a 15 percent lessened risk of cancer death during the study.

The study of eating whole grain cereals & cereal fiber effect on lowering risk of premature death made use of 566,339 members of the AARP ages 50 to 71 from Florida, Louisiana, California, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and the urban areas of Georgia and Detroit.

The participant's answers to questionnaires back in 1993 were used where details including frequency of intake for various food types, portion size to determine their health and diet were taken into account.

People who were found to be associated with cancer, stroke, diabetes, heart disease, or end-stage renal disease were not included in the study.

Results indicate that by eating whole grain cereals and cereal fiber lower the risk of premature death from chronic ailments, Fox News reports.

Researchers have also concluded that "cereal fiber partly accounts for the protective effects of whole grains."

The study of eating whole grain cereals & fiber cereals is published online on March 23 in the BMC Medicine Journal.
